The Foodie Award Categories for 2022

The Foodie Awards are for businesses, organisations and individuals who are based or work mainly in Coventry and Warwickshire.

Entries open on 12 November 2022:

Food/Drink Experience

This category recognises an experience that is built around food and drink. Whether you’re a supper club or pop-up restaurant, food festival, family event, vineyard, farm or anything else in between, we'll be looking for the very best food-related experience, from supper clubs to pop-up restaurants, street food venues, food festivals, family events, vineyards, farms and more.  Judges will take into consideration all aspects of the visitor experience, from food and drink choice and quality to décor, ambience and customer service, entertainment and elements that serve to create an unrivalled foodie experience.

Young Foodie of the Year

This category looks to highlight some of the up-and-coming food champions in Coventry and Warwickshire. Whether an aspiring chef, a street food entrepreneur or someone who champions the food and drink scene locally in some way, shape or form, this award will acknowledge their passion and drive for the sector.

Entrants in this category will be asked to give details on their role, outlining why they are likely to be instrumental in the Coventry and Warwickshire food and drink scene going forward and why they stand out from their peers. This category will be judged by a panel including leading restaurateurs, chefs and business owners within the sector who themselves know what makes the food champions of the future.

Newcomer (Business started in the last 12 months)

This category recognises a food-related business that is relatively new to the scene. Whether you’re a bar or a bakery you are welcome to enter, providing you launched within the 12 months before the launch of the 2022 awards. The award will recognise an innovative business that has demonstrated early success or potential and has made waves despite being the new kid on the block. We want to see businesses with personality and ambition which will play a key role in putting Coventry & Warwickshire on the map when it comes to food and drink.

Fine Dining Restaurant of the Year

This award will recognise the best fine-dining restaurant in the region. This category is open to restaurants who produce food that can be classed as ‘fine dining’, whether via tasting menus or a la carte menus. These restaurants may have a Michelin Star or other awards, or may be working towards that. Judges will be looking for food that pushes boundaries, excels on presentation, and firmly fits the bill of fine dining.

This restaurant will be judged by a panel of top chefs and restaurateurs from the region. Shortlisted restaurants will be visited by teams of judges who will assess the food, ambience, service and other elements that contribute to make a fine dining restaurant the best in the business.

Fine Dining Chef of the Year

This award recognises the chefs behind some of the best fine dining food in the region. Whether from restaurants or running their own supper club or pop-up or offering at-home chef services, these chefs go above-and-beyond to produce superlative food, both in taste and presentation. A panel of judges made up of top chefs and restaurateurs will be looking for imagination and innovation, as well as careful sourcing of ingredients and a clear injection of personality and pride in their food.

The judges will shortlist finalists based on their entry to the award, and those finalists will then be asked to attend a cook-off judged by the panel.

Best Casual Dining Establishment

This category recognises establishments that turn out great food whilst not perhaps falling into the category of fine dining. Whether a great gastropub or a brilliant brasserie, a casual café or something else, this category allows any establishment that serves great tasting food to shout about what they do.

A panel of judges from the food and drink sector in Coventry and Warwickshire will shortlist entries, looking at their ethos, passion, menus and ability to stand out from the crowd, going on to then visit each establishment to assess it on quality of food including taste and presentation, service, ambience and other elements that highlight it as the best casual dining establishment in the region

Best Casual Dining Chef

This category recognises chefs who turn out consistently great food in an array of contexts. Nobody ever said a great eggs Benedict can’t be as tasty as a beef carpaccio and this category recognises the people who wow tastebuds with more casual dishes. Nominations are welcome from anyone who cooks more casually, whether in a pub or bar, a café or a more casual restaurant. A panel of judges made up of top chefs and restaurateurs will be looking for imagination and innovation in cooking, as well as careful sourcing of ingredients and a clear injection of personality and pride in their food.

The judges will shortlist finalists based on their entry to the award, and those finalists will then be asked to attend a cook-off judged by the panel.

The International Taste Award

This award showcases the array of international cuisine being produced across Coventry and Warwickshire. It gives a chance for every business from Indian restaurants to Mexican street food traders, and everything in between, the chance to show off what it does. Whether you’re a restaurant owner, someone turning out great takeaways, or a producer of food and drink from around the world, this is the category for you.

A panel of judges will look at the story behind the entrant - why they do what they do, what their ethos is, and how they bring a different culture to Coventry and Warwickshire. Entries will be judged on quality of food, personality, ethos, sustainability and what makes your business stand out from the crowd.

Farm Shop

We are looking for a farm shop that leads the way in sales of farm to fork produce, offering top quality, a broad range of produce and great service all in one place. We’ll be looking for farm shops that really do go the extra mile whilst simultaneously keeping food miles low and championing produce from local growers, producers and suppliers, finding supportive and sustainable ways of working with them and showcasing what the county has to offer.

Artisan Drink Producer

This category recognises the makers and producers behind the area’s artisan drinks. Whether you’re a brewery, distillery, winery or coffee roastery, if your product is an artisan drink then you can enter.
Our panel of industry experts will analyse entries based on the following:-

Quality of product and provenance of ingredients
How you tell your story through branding and presentation
Originality of product and innovation

How much your product stands out from the competition

For comprehensive judging, shortlisted finalists will be asked to send their product in for judging so the panel can try it first hand

The winner will be selected by a panel of experts experienced in the industry who will look at the following areas:-

Quality of product and provenance of ingredients

This award recognises the importance of independent businesses. The winner will be an independent food or drink retailer whose innovative products, excellent customer service, and popularity within the local community and beyond has seen it stand up to the chains and provide that ‘something special’ that food and drink lovers are looking for. A panel of judges will visit each shortlisted retailer looking for somewhere that really stands out, offering quality products, great service and a unique ‘personality’ that plays a part in its success.

Café/Coffee Shop

This award is for a café or coffee shop that serves great coffee with a high level of service, but also goes the extra mile to demonstrate excellence, becoming more of a community hub than just a food and drink pitstop. The quality of food and drink on offer will be taken into account, as well as all the added extras that help a place win people’s hearts as well as their taste buds.

Our team of judges, including experts from the coffee world, will visit each shortlisted café and coffee shop to look at all of the above elements.

Pub or Bar

Whether you’re running a high-end wine bar or town centre tavern, this award recognises passion for excellence and the lengths licensees go to to lay on a first-class customer experience, making this a must go-to destination for locals and visitors alike. The category is open to establishments from country pubs to cocktail bars, tap rooms, wine bars and anywhere that tempts people with a tipple. The winner will be able to boast a great offering, innovative ideas and top-level service that make it a hit with drinks fans across the board.

The Foodie Awards judges will visit each shortlisted establishment to assess elements including the selection of drinks available, the provenance of those drinks, quality of service, decor and ambience, and anything that makes it stand out from the crowd.

Street Food Trader

Employee of the Year

This award gives employers the opportunity to recognise someone on their team who they think has gone above and beyond within the business. That person could be a chef, a kitchen porter, someone in front of house, a member of back-room staff or anyone else who they think deserves some recognition for what they do. Judges will want to hear about the person you’ve picked, what it is they do, and how they have gone above and beyond within your business.

This category will be judged by experts in the regional food and drink world.

Food Hero/Community award

This award recognises someone who has gone the extra mile for the food scene in Coventry & Warwickshire. Whether that’s helping the local community, providing opportunities, creating a brand new business that benefits the area, or anything else that supports the food and drink world in the region, all are welcome to enter.

This award will be judged by a public vote. A panel of judges will shortlist finalists, then the public will be asked to vote for their Food Hero of 2022 for the awards.

Godiva Award (exclusive to Coventry) - Sponsored by Coventry BID

As a symbol of Coventry and its Medieval past, Lady Godiva is also a symbol of overcoming adversity, which is what this award is about.  Judges will be looking to identify a Coventry Food and Drink business that has reached out to the Coventry community in a way like no other, a business that has its roots in Coventry but has a regional, national and even international feel. As the city with the most twinned cities in the world Coventry’s Godiva Award will be extended to a business that puts Coventry on the map.

This award will be judged by a team from category sponsor Coventry BID (TBC) and selected guests with a link to or passion for Coventry.
